Today, the Nova Scotia Provincial Government announced their back to school plan for 2020/2021. Here are the details:

  • Children will return to the classroom September 8
  • Enhanced health and safety measures in place. PPE and sanitizer has been ordered
  • Staff that require extra PPE will have access to what they need
  • Self screening before entering building
  • Masks mandatory on buses and in common areas of high schools
  • Younger children will bubble with class mates
  • Schedules will be staggered to limit interactions in hallways etc...
  • No access to lockers at any schools
  • Access to schools will be limited to essential adults only. All parents have to check in at the office when entering the building
  • No large gatherings such as assemblies and concerts
  • Parent teacher meetings will be virtual
  • School clubs will go ahead if they can be done safely and follow public health guidelines

  • Curriculum will be complete though music and physical education may look different to accommodate public health guidelines
  • Sports will go ahead based on approval once plans are submitted
  • Report cards and other assessments will be done as per normal
  • Food programs will be in place
  • Children unable to attend due to health reasons will be accommodated
  • Consultations were completed with the IWK, the Department of Health, NSTU and over 28000 parent surveys
  • The plan is flexible and can respond to 1 school, several or entire regions based on the situation of the virus at any given time. If online learning needs to take place at any time, it will be much more comprehensive than what we saw the last few months
  • The priority is to keep children in school with their peers
